Two modules, not one long section

Digital SAT Math is split into two modules delivered back to back within the same section. You complete Module 1, submit it, and then move into Module 2 — you cannot go back to Module 1 once you've moved on. Each module has its own internal timer, and questions within a module can be flagged and revisited before time runs out, but only within that module.

This two-module design is what makes the digital SAT "adaptive": the difficulty mix in Module 2 depends on how you performed in Module 1. Timing, module by module

Each Math module runs 35 minutes, for a total of 70 minutes across both modules. That's the number to plan your pacing around — not the total test day length, which includes Reading and Writing as well as breaks.

With roughly 22 questions per module, that works out to a little over a minute and a half per question on average — though real pacing isn't uniform, since some questions (especially longer word problems or multi-step Advanced Math) take noticeably longer than quick Algebra or data-reading questions.

Why adaptive difficulty changes your strategy

Because Module 2's difficulty depends on Module 1, your approach to Module 1 should prioritize accuracy over speed whenever the two are in tension. Rushing through Module 1 and making avoidable mistakes can land you in an easier Module 2 track, which caps your potential score even if you handle Module 2 flawlessly.

Once you're in Module 2, your strategy shifts slightly. If you can tell the module is leaning harder, expect more multi-step Advanced Math and Geometry/Trigonometry questions and budget extra time for them. If it feels more straightforward, keep your pace steady rather than second-guessing easy answers.

  • Treat Module 1 as the highest-leverage 35 minutes of the entire Math section.
  • Flag questions you're unsure about and return to them before submitting each module — you can't revisit after moving to the next module.
  • Don't spend more than two to three minutes on any single question; move on and flag it instead.

A harder variant to watch for: multi-part questions

Some questions, particularly in Advanced Math and Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, present a shared scenario — a table, a graph, or a described situation — and then ask a question built on top of it. These take longer to read than a standalone equation, and it's easy to under-budget time for them if you're mentally pacing off a flat "90 seconds per question" rule. When you hit one of these, spend a few extra seconds up front making sure you understand exactly what the scenario describes before you touch the actual question — misreading the setup is a more common error here than misapplying the math itself.

Because these questions read longer but aren't necessarily conceptually harder, they're a good candidate for flagging if you feel rushed, rather than a place to guess blindly. Coming back to a familiar setup with a clearer head, even a minute later, is often enough to solve it correctly.

A simple flagging routine that actually works

Flagging only helps if you use it with a rule, not just a feeling. A workable routine: if you can't see a clear path to the answer within about 20-30 seconds of reading a question, flag it immediately and move on rather than staring at it hoping a method appears. Come back to flagged questions only after you've answered everything else you're confident about — that way, a question that eats three minutes doesn't accidentally crowd out two or three questions you could have answered quickly.

Near the end of the module timer, prioritize flagged questions you have a partial idea about over ones that still look completely unfamiliar, since a partial idea is more likely to convert into a correct guess than a total unknown.

How this compares to the old paper format

The paper SAT had one long Math section split into calculator and no-calculator parts, with fixed difficulty throughout for every student. There was no adaptive component at all.
